Work From Home or Live At Work?

Working from home has us all asking a lot of questions, when does our house begin to feel like a home again? At what point will our kitchen table stop being covered in paper work so that we can actually start eating at it again?

This is a question that I think anyone working from home can relate to. Contrary to what many experts believed when the ‘work from home’ idea was unleashed on us this year, nearly 7 months on and it seems like we have still not arrived at the definition of what work from home should really look like.

With no more long commutes, no early alarms, and no rush hour traffic it’s fair to say we all expected working days to be a lot shorter. In fact, it seems to be the complete opposite for most of us. With nowhere to go to escape work most of us have been working longer hours compared to what we would work in the office. With the newly accessible working environment it’s hard to know when to turn off; our kitchen tables are covered in paperwork, our bedrooms are no longer a place to rest when our zoom meetings have taken priority. It’s hard when you walk by your work space umpteen times a day, you cannot help but take a cursory check of your emails.

Now let’s talk productivity. Working longer hours and struggling to escape work does not mean we are being productive with our time. I think it’s important to establish a separate work space from your home space. This sounds impossible when you are doing both in the same building but trust me it’s manageable. My first top tip is to keep your bedroom separate to your ‘office’. I know this isn’t possible for us all but if you have another space that you can work in I really recommend doing so. There’s nothing worse than having a stressful day at work and feeling like you have no escape because you’ve been stuck in the same four walls all day that you now have to sleep in. Wake up early. Have a shower. Get dressed for the day. Eat breakfast. Open your windows, get some fresh air. It’s these small things that make the difference to your day. When you start your day feeling productive it will continue throughout.

What do you think, are working from home or living at work?
